In 1878, the Chicago & Alton Railroad ran a new line through Jackson County and bypassed two existing villages — Pink Hill to the north and Stony Point to the south. So the residents of both villages picked up and physically relocated, meeting in the middle along the new tracks. The new town was named Grain Valley because of the wheat-growing fields surrounding it. You can still find street names that honor those original settlers (Cannon Street, named after J.H. Cannon who moved his Stony Point store over when the railroad arrived).

For more than a century Grain Valley stayed small — a thousand people in 1980, two thousand by 1990 — but the city has grown more than five times over since then, sitting at about 16,800 residents today. The town is 23 miles east of downtown Kansas City on I-70, and locals call it the eastern gateway to the metro.

The streets are laid out on a clean grid with notably large city lots, which makes the town feel less dense than its population suggests. The architectural mix runs from mid-century brick ranches in the older central blocks around the Bank of Grain Valley (founded 1905, still operating) to newer two-story builds on the north and south edges where most of the recent growth has happened. Because the town grew out of farmland rather than forest, the tree canopy is thinner than older Jackson County suburbs — homes here get more direct sun on their siding, which means algae shows up faster in humid Missouri summers.

On weekends people are out at the Brass Armadillo Antique Mall, Valley Speedway, or line-dancing at MO Country (which calls itself the largest line-dancing bar in Missouri). It's a town that knows where it came from, and the homes here deserve to look it.
