The Wyandot Native Americans (relocated from Ohio in the 1840s) and Methodist missionaries founded Wyandotte there in 1857, and the Kansas state constitution was written in Wyandotte's Constitutional Hall in July 1859.

The current city was assembled by consolidation. In March 1886, five municipalities merged into "new" Kansas City, Kansas — Wyandotte, Armstrong, Armourdale, Riverview, and old Kansas City. Argentine joined by petition in 1909, Rosedale by legislative enactment in 1922, Turner by annexation in 1966, and Quindaro got absorbed by natural expansion. The five-into-one pattern repeated in 1997, when voters merged the city government with Wyandotte County's into the Unified Government of Wyandotte County/Kansas City, Kansas. KCK — known locally as "The Dot" — is now the third-most populous city in Kansas with 156,607 residents at the 2020 census, and the county seat of Wyandotte County, which at 151.6 square miles is also the smallest-by-area county in the state.

The neighborhoods have their own identities. Strawberry Hill sits on a bluff overlooking Kaw Point, settled in the late 1800s by Slavic immigrants — Croatians, Slovenes, and Serbians — who worked the meatpacking plants down in the West Bottoms. The Strawberry Hill Museum & Cultural Center occupies an 1887 Victorian Queen Anne home built by John G. Braecklein for John and Margaret Scroggs. The construction of I-70 through the neighborhood in 1957 razed 219 households across 4.5 blocks, but the area has rebounded with a housing boom and a dive bar scene that's hard to beat anywhere in the metro.

Argentine — named after the Spanish word for silver — grew up around the Santa Fe Railway shops established 1880 and the Consolidated Kansas City Smelting & Refining Company. The Argentine Carnegie Library, built in 1916-1917, is the only Carnegie library in the metro area.

Rosedale was platted in 1872 along what had been a Santa Fe Trail stop, named for the wild roses that covered the bluffs. Its most striking landmark is the Rosedale Memorial Arch, dedicated September 7, 1924 — a scaled-down replica of the Arc de Triomphe, designed by Rosedale-born architect John LeRoy Marshall to honor the neighborhood's World War I veterans. The arch sits atop Mount Marty overlooking Rainbow Boulevard and Southwest Boulevard. Today Rosedale is also home to KU Medical Center, the 47th Avenue corridor, Joe's Kansas City Bar-B-Que in a former gas station, and Spicin Foods (makers of Da Bomb Hot Sauce).

Quindaro was founded in 1856 by Abelard Guthrie and Charles Robinson, named for Guthrie's Wyandot wife Quindaro Brown Guthrie — "little bundle of sticks" in the Wyandot language. It served as a Free State port and Underground Railroad stop before declining during the Civil War. The archaeological ruins are now preserved at the Quindaro Underground Railroad Museum.

Out west, Village West is the modern entertainment district: Kansas Speedway hosting NASCAR weekends, Children's Mercy Park as home to MLS's Sporting Kansas City, Legends Field for the Kansas City Monarchs, and Tanger KC at the Legends anchoring the shopping along with Nebraska Furniture Mart, Hollywood Casino, and Great Wolf Lodge. The University of Kansas Hospital is the largest employer in the city. The GM Fairfax Assembly Plant builds Chevy Malibus and Cadillac XT4s.
