The farmhouse still stands at Mission Road and 103rd Street, and the city that grew up around it has been the Kansas City metro's most affluent suburb for decades. Leawood was incorporated on October 31, 1948, with the original 1,167 acres covering what's now the area between State Line Road and Mission Road, 79th to 95th Streets. The city now spans 15.21 square miles across northeastern Johnson County, with 33,902 residents at the 2020 census and a median household income above $180,000 — among the highest in Kansas.

The neighborhoods south of 95th are mostly post-1950 — Hallbrook on the west side has a private 18-hole Tom Fazio golf course and homes from $1 million to $5 million. Mission Farms around 105th and Mission Road is a New Urbanist mixed-use development with brick streets, shops, restaurants, and high-density residential. Iron Horse Golf Club, Leawood South Country Club, and Leawood Country Club anchor three more master-planned neighborhoods. The Tomahawk Creek Greenway, a paved trail along the creek of the same name, connects much of the south side and gets heavy use year-round.

North of 95th Street, the original 1950s Leawood neighborhoods — designed by landscape architect Hare & Hare, who also planned the Country Club Plaza — sit on curving streets with mature canopy and brick or stone ranches and split-levels. The city was designed from the beginning with strict landscaping standards, and the "City of Trees" nickname comes from the requirement that every developed lot include mature shade trees. That canopy is now sixty to seventy years old, and the leaf and seed load every fall is heavy.

Town Center Plaza at 119th and Roe is the commercial anchor, opened in 1996 with around 100 stores and restaurants. The Leawood Stage Company performs at City Park during the summer. Ironwoods Park has a 5K cross-country course, fishing pond, and 18-hole disc golf. Gezer Park, named for Leawood's sister city in Israel, has a public art collection. The Leawood Aquatic Center on Lee Boulevard is the city pool. The Park Place mixed-use development at 115th and Nall has retail, restaurants, and luxury apartments.

The architecture mixes mid-century stone and brick ranches in the older north end, late-century traditional two-stories through the middle, and 2000s-and-newer prairie-style and modern farmhouse in the south. The city's strict landscaping ordinances mean trees, mulch beds, and seasonal plantings everywhere — which means leaf litter, mulch staining, and the kind of regular maintenance that high-end homes require to look the part.

From the original Hall farmhouse to the newest builds on the south end, Leawood has 95 years of construction under one of the densest mature tree canopies in the metro.
