Lenexa itself was platted on October 12, 1869, named after Lenexa Blackhoof, the wife of a Shawnee chief whose land the town was built on. The first post office opened in 1871, and the town slowly grew along the railroad through the late 1800s and early 1900s.

The big leap came after WWII. Lenexa was incorporated as a third-class city in 1907 with just over 200 residents, sat at about 1,000 through the 1950s, and then exploded — 23,000 in 1990, 43,000 in 2010, and 57,434 at the 2020 census. The city now covers 35 square miles in Johnson County between Olathe to the south and Shawnee to the north, with I-35 running diagonally through it.

Old Town Lenexa around 87th & Pflumm has the original 1880s and 1890s storefronts, restored and active with the Lenexa Public Market, restaurants, and the Lenexa Civic Campus that opened in 2017. The original Lenexa City Hall from the 1900s still stands as part of the Lenexa Historical Society. Cody Park sits at the geographic heart of the original town with the 1929 limestone WWI memorial, and the Legler Barn Museum at 14907 W. 87th Street Parkway is a restored 1865 limestone hay barn that was originally a Santa Fe Trail stagecoach stop, moved to its current location in 1984.

The neighborhoods range widely. Falcon Ridge in the southwest has 1990s and 2000s two-story traditionals with mature trees just coming into their own. Canyon Creek by Indian Creek has 1980s ranches and split-levels with established oak canopy. Quail Creek out near 95th and Pflumm has 1970s ranches with original brick and aluminum siding that's seen plenty of weather. The southwestern edge along K-7 and 95th gets newer all the way out to 110th Street with modern farmhouses, prairie-style two-stories, and large-lot custom homes still under construction. Lenexa City Center, the master-planned mixed-use development around the Civic Campus, brings urban apartments and condos to the central spine.

Lenexa calls itself the "City of Festivals" — the Spinach Festival every September is the marquee event, started in 1934 by The Kansas City Star after a 1930s article called Lenexa the "Spinach Capital of the World" based on local cannery output. The Great Lenexa BBQ Battle in June is one of the largest sanctioned barbecue contests in the country. Chili & Beans cook-offs, Community Days, and the Lenexa Art Fair fill in the calendar.

The trail system covers 36 miles of paved paths, the Black Hoof Park surrounds the 35-acre Lake Lenexa, and Sar-Ko-Par Trails Park covers 96 acres in the heart of town with playgrounds, ballfields, and three small ponds.

From the limestone barn that started as a stagecoach stop to the brand-new construction out near K-7, Lenexa keeps growing — and the homes here range from 1900s clapboard to 2025 vinyl, with every era in between needing something different.
