That's where William Ray set up his blacksmith shop around 1848 — right on the Santa Fe Trail at the intersection where multiple wagon trails crossed. There's a historical marker there now, but the spot still functions the way it did, a crossroads where everything comes through.

The settlement that grew up around Ray's forge was first called "Lost Township" (Jackson County's surveyor had skipped over the area in 1826, calling the prairie grass "no good"), then "Blue Ridge" because the wooded ridges reminded settlers of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Eventually it became Ray's Town, and officially Raytown in 1854. It's probably the second-oldest town in Jackson County.

Less than a mile from there on 66th Street stands the Rice-Tremonti House, built in 1844 by Archibald Rice on his 160-acre farm that sat right on the Santa Fe, Oregon, and California trails. The Gothic Revival farmhouse is the oldest standing frame house in Jackson County, on the National Register since 1978. Twenty-seven separate traveler diaries from 1838 to 1849 mention Rice's hospitality — his sweet bacon, fresh eggs, and new milk. Behind the main house sits Aunt Sophia White's Cabin, originally built in the 1830s, and the granite Santa Fe Trail marker placed there in 1913 is the only one in Missouri honoring an African American.

Raytown was incorporated as a city on July 17, 1950 with about 1,000 people on two square miles — residents wanted self-government and to avoid annexation by Kansas City. It's grown into a steady community of about 30,000 across 9.9 square miles. The homes you'll see here are mostly 1950s and 60s, built during the post-incorporation boom — solid mid-century brick ranches and split-levels, many with original wood trim and aluminum gutters that have weathered every Missouri freeze-thaw cycle for seventy years.

The mature oak and hickory canopy across Kenagy Park and the older residential streets means serious gutter work every fall, plus the algae and moss that settle on north walls of brick homes. The "city of beautiful homes" reputation actually shows up in Raytown's earliest civic documents, and the people who live here today still take that seriously. The brick stays, the trim ages, the canopy keeps growing — and the maintenance never quite catches a break.
