The pilots, Augustus and Arthur Stearns, are reported to be the first to have flown a heavier-than-air craft west of the Mississippi River. The Wright Flyer they flew that day is now part of the collection at the American Museum of Natural History. The cow pasture is now Antioch Park.

That kind of casual history is everywhere in Overland Park. Real estate developer William B. Strang Jr. founded the town in 1905 along his Strang Line streetcar between Kansas City and Olathe, calling it "an overland park" because it was a stop along the route. The city was officially incorporated on May 20, 1960 — relatively late for the metro — and grew explosively through the 1970s, 80s, and 90s into the second-largest city in Kansas. The 2020 census put it at 197,238 residents across 75 square miles, and current estimates have it close to 202,000.

The architecture tells the story of that growth. Downtown Overland Park, anchored at 80th Street and Santa Fe Drive, has the original 1905-1920s commercial district — brick storefronts, original tin ceilings, antique shops, and the kind of restaurants that locals actually go to. The surrounding Downtown Historic District has bungalows and Craftsman homes from the 1910s and 20s shaded by mature oak and elm canopy. North of I-435 the housing skews mid-century ranch and split-level. South of 135th Street the development gets newer with master-planned communities like Forest Hills, Mills Farm, and the Wilshire — large-lot custom homes, big trees still maturing, modern farmhouse and prairie-style architecture.

Overland Park is known as the most affluent city in the Kansas City metro and one of the highest-income cities in the country, with a median household income around $108,000. The Overland Park Convention Center sits at 6000 College Boulevard. The Sprint/T-Mobile world headquarters campus covers 240 acres just east of I-435 at 119th Street. Two regional shopping centers — Oak Park Mall in north OP and Town Center Plaza at 119th and Roe — handle the everyday retail. The Johnson County Executive Airport in southwest OP hosts business jets daily.

The Overland Park Arboretum & Botanical Gardens at 8909 W. 179th Street covers 300 acres along Wolf Creek with eight themed gardens, ponds, and miles of paved trails. Deanna Rose Children's Farmstead at 138th and Switzer has been a Saturday-morning destination for KC families for forty years. The Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art at Johnson County Community College holds one of the most respected contemporary art collections in the Midwest. Corporate Woods's 300-acre office park has hosted the annual Jazz Festival since 1978.

The schools run two top-rated districts: Shawnee Mission to the north (the city is split between Shawnee Mission and Blue Valley) and Blue Valley School District to the south, consistently among the top public districts in the state. The Johnson County Library system has a major branch on Antioch Road.

From the bungalows along Santa Fe Drive to the custom homes south of 175th, Overland Park has more square footage of exterior surface per square mile than just about anywhere else in the metro — and a population that notices.
