The city wasn't even incorporated yet — that happened a few months later, on August 13, 1949. The honor went to the planned community that developer J.C. Nichols had built starting in 1941 on the former Porter Farm and surrounding land, designed in coordination with landscape architects Hare & Hare and laid out around shared green space, curving residential streets, and a central village shopping district.

Prairie Village set the template for what postwar American suburbs would look like for the next thirty years. The neighborhoods Nichols built — Prairie Village, Prairie Hills, Prairie Forest — used uniform setback requirements, mandatory landscaping, deed-restricted residential zoning, and the now-standard cul-de-sac street layout decades before those features became common. The result is a city that still looks remarkably like its original 1940s and 50s plan, with neat ranch and two-story Colonial Revival, Tudor, and Cape Cod homes on tree-lined streets across 6.7 square miles in north-central Johnson County.

The 2020 census put Prairie Village at 22,957 residents. The city has consistently ranked in the top tier of Kansas City metro suburbs for school quality (Shawnee Mission East High School), walkability, and community engagement, and Money magazine has put it on multiple "Best Places to Live" lists since 1989.

The Prairie Village Shops at 71st and Mission Road — the original village center Nichols built in the late 1940s — still operates with locally-owned restaurants, a Hen House grocery, salons, and the Prairie Village Municipal Building. The Corinth Square shopping center at 83rd and Mission Road, opened in 1955, is the other major commercial anchor. Both centers have been continuously occupied since they were built.

The housing stock is overwhelmingly 1940s through 1960s — the original Nichols-built homes — with limestone, brick, and clapboard exteriors, original windows in many cases, and a mature oak, maple, and sycamore canopy that's been growing for seventy to eighty years. Modest infill construction and renovations have added some newer homes, but the city actively discourages teardowns and the original character stays intact. The annual Prairie Village Art Fair every May draws thousands to the village center. The Jazz Fest in September and the Holiday Lights Parade in December round out the community calendar.

Prairie Village has more original mid-century housing under decades-old canopy than almost any other suburb in the metro, and the residents take care of those homes the way Nichols designed the city to encourage. We see that in the curb appeal on every block.
