Then a low-pressure rinse lifts the dead growth away. The chemistry is sodium hypochlorite (the same chemistry that's in pool water and household bleach), diluted properly with something that helps it cling to the shingles. What's actually on most roofs is Gloeocapsa magma — a living bacteria that produces the black streaks most homeowners assume are dirt. It feeds on the limestone in the shingles and shortens roof life by 5 to 10 years if left untreated. Moss, lichen, and other biological growth accumulate too, particularly on shaded sections and north-facing roof slopes.
